GOALS

The Drug-free Playzone -project helps to prevent the use of drugs in organised exercise and sports activities of young people under 18 years. The goal is to make young athletes, parents, coaches and other sports staff think about the rules of using drugs. The project offers information on drugs, education, operation models, co-operation networks and tips on how to make drug-free agreements to support young people's leisure activities.

Paihteetonpelikentta.net is a meeting place for all the sport clubs and individual people who are interested in preventative drug work.

HISTORY

In the late 1990's there was a lot of discussion about the use of drugs among young athletes. The discussion was supported by the results of Youth Health Manners -research in which a clear connection between drinking alcohol and participating in sports activities was noticed. In addition to that, the use of snuff has been noticed to be more common among athletes than other young people.

In January 2000 invited the Health Promotion Centre manager Harri Vertio the representatives of organisations that operate on the field of preventing the use of drugs to an Sports and Drugs -meeting. In the same meeting a work group was set up to make the initial plans for the project. In the same year the Culture Minister Suvi Linden appointed an administrator to collect information of the use of alcohol among young athletes. The report ended up recommending wide co-operation in the field to solve the existing problems. The Drug-free Playzone -project started in May 2001 with the finance from the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.
